What is Data Loss?
Why should we be more cautious about data? Because there is a dreaded term called DATA LOSS. A disk crash may be a more common term. Data loss can occur due to many reasons. Some of them are, user negligence (40% of cases), virus attacks (20% of cases), Operating System corruption (20% of cases), voltage or system faults (5% of the cases), sabotage (5% of cases) and the rest unknown reasons. The reasons are many and most of the times the user does not even know how his important files went missing. I don't blame them, why should they know. It's not their job. But he is the sufferer. Who suffers most are the small offices (40% of the cases), home users (10% of the cases), corporate and MNCs (20% of the cases) and Government (30% of the cases).
Data is a business's most valuable resource. Protecting data from corruption, user error, hardware failure, theft or site disaster is widely recognized as a critical part of business operations. Despite this, not all data is equally protected. Backing up data on a relatively small number of servers can be effectively controlled by the system administrator, client data on desktops and notebooks is notoriously vulnerable to loss or corruption-largely because backups are the responsibility of each user and are performed inconsistently.
As businesses expand, the amount of data that requires storage and protection has increased dramatically, and for many businesses this increase has been exponential. At the same time, the window of time during which data can be backed up without negatively impacting business operations has decreased. Both of these factors have combined to make the system administrator's job of storing and protecting data fundamentally more challenging.
Backup of servers directly to tape has been the primary method of data protection for the better part of the last 20 years. Tapes, inexpensive and mobile relative to disk-based backups, have long provided a cost effective data protection solution. However, as each additional server is brought online to increase storage and production capacity, an additional tape drive must be directly attached to provide backup protection. Not only does this approach drive up equipment costs, but also scheduling and administering backups of dozens or hundreds of computers can overwhelm system administrator resources. This problem is all the more challenging when multiple operating systems, each with their own backup protocols, are in use. DATA PROTECTION is the primary concern of all companies big or small.
I have just mentioned to you about what the importance of data is, and how data loss occurs. I also mentioned the user has to be more cautious. He should take precautions to prevent a Disaster, what ever the disaster may be.
The main causes of concern of all companies regarding data are:
How to keep data secure and safe so that all is not lost due to calamities like disk crash, natural disasters and sabotage?
How to choose the right solution of data protection, data loss prevention and data recovery so that data is safe and available within the shortest possible time?
How to reduce the downtime of the user so that secondary loss, like manpower loss and loss of computer settings are not lost?
