What to Do & What not to Do in Data Loss Situation
When in a data loss situation, do not panic. This will create more chances of worsening the situation, as you may tend to do things that are not to be done. Read the following do's and don'ts and keep them in mind, if you face such a situation.
Backup your data as soon as you get a warning alarm about the deterioration of the disk or bad sectors.
Switch OFF the system as soon as you hear some unusual sounds from the disk. If the system does not detect the disk on the next boot, switch it OFF and send it to data recovery experts. Do not switch ON the computer many times as this may lead to more damage on the disk.
Always give the disk for data recovery only to specialists and do not rely on non-professionals as they may ignorantly spoil the data recovery case.
If a file or folder is deleted accidentally, stop all work immediately and shutdown the system. Consult a data recovery expert for retrieving the deleted files. If you do any work even in other folders, that would overwrite the deleted files and reduce chances of recovery.
The recovery CD provided to you by your computer vendors is not a data recovery CD, but an Installation CD. This CD is to be used to re-install your OS and applications. It will not bring back your data!
In case of any data loss situation, do not copy, create, and download files in the same disk. If you need to download data recovery software, download it on another system and recover data from the data loss disk.
If your drive has been accidentally formatted or partition has been lost, do not re-install the operating system. Data is still present in the drive and can be recovered by experts. Yes, even if you have re-installed the operating system, data can that has not yet been overwritten can be recovered!
If an application is not working (like accounting, database, email etc) find out where its data is created, its data file names and extensions. Backup those files to another system or CD's. After you make sure that the data is backed up, then reinstall that application. It has been found that, after re-installation of certain applications, their data files get initialized!
If the operating system crashes, do not panic, your data is still in there. First recover your data to another system and then re-install the operating system. You never know the internal cause of the operating system crash.
Very few viruses actually corrupt data files. They mostly corrupt the operating system or applications. In case of a virus attack, or unusual system performance recover your data first. Then run a good anti-virus software. If a virus has already corrupted the operating system, removing the virus will not bring the system back to working. You will have to re-install the operating system.
