Diagnosing a Physical Crash
First connect the disk as primary in the system. Switch on the computer and press DEL key ( in some computers you may have to press F1 or Ctrl Alt Esc). Now menu is displayed where an option Auto Detect hard Disk is shown ( in latest systems it is not shown as detection is automatic). With arrow keys go to that option and press Enter. Detection will start. If the value is None that means the disk is not detected by the computer. If some value is shown then you will have to select a option to choose ( LBA, Normal or Large). Higher capacity hard disks are to be selected in LBA mode. Most of the smaller ( less than 260MB hard disks are mostly with Normal mode).
After switching on the computer be alert to notice and hear any unusual noise or vibration from the disk. If there is noise/vibration and the disk gets detected, boot the system using a bootable floppy and run analyzer from the Quick Recovery floppy. If the analyzer hangs in between or analysis is slowly moving through sectors then it is a physical problem on the disk.
Physical damage to hard disk can happen due to reasons like shock, voltage fluctuation, magnetic radiation from a nearby source, excessive heat, user negligence ( connecting a disk while power is ON, touching the logic card when system is ON, shaking the disk when system is ON etc) and also due to natural calamities like fire, earthquake, water spillage etc. Laptop hard disk are the most vulnerable to data loss as they are subjected to shock, X-Ray machines at airports, pressure applied on the key board presses the soft cover of the hard disk underneath it.
